Homebuying Tips For Parents

May 18th, 2020

Finding the perfect home is not always easy and as a parent, it can be even harder. While you may be able to renovate the kitchen or refresh the paint, you cannot pick and choose your school zone. As a parent, you want to find a home in an area that is safe, fun, and zoned for the school of your dreams.

While you are out there looking for your dream home, keep the following items in mind.

School System

Finding a good school system is one of the most important things to look for when purchasing a new home. Often, it can be difficult to get a variance. Make sure you find a home located in a great elementary, middle, and high school district.

The easiest way to do this is to write down a list of your favorite homes and start reviewing the schools they are zoned for. You can look online for reviews of the school, visit the school in person and even post in local Facebook groups to get other parent’s opinions of the school.

Local Parks & Beaches

Do your children enjoy going to the beach or park? When home shopping, look for homes located 15 - 25 minutes away from a park or beach. If it is any further than that, it will be a pain to take them and you will be much less likely to do it.

Nearby Activities

Making sure you are close to a variety of activities is essential to surviving the warmer months. When you are looking for your home, check to see if you can find any of the following nearby activities:

  • Arcades
  • Trampoline parks
  • Movie theaters
  • Theme parks
  • Puzzle rooms
  • Museums
  • Art galleries
  • Zoos/animal sanctuaries

Crime Rates

Look online to review the crime rate. Looking at a neighborhood can tell you a lot, but that is not a surefire way of knowing how safe it is. Online you can find the crime rate, if any predators live near your home and what crimes most commonly occur. This can provide a snapshot of the neighborhood and whether you will feel comfortable raising children there.
